Will be interesting to hear what the independent investigation has to say. There are a lot of possibilities, some not so nefarious, such as a mine, to go along with the obvious "the Commies shot them" answer. Another thing that may have happened is an accidental weapons release. This happened on MED 2-92 when the Saratoga's Point Defense Missiles were unleashed on the bridge of the Muavenet, a Turkish destroyer steaming in company. Sometimes, things can go very wrong at sea.
Update: Haven't read the report yet, but the news says the investigators said "torpedo" and that they've recovered evidence consistent with a DPRK torpedo captured by the South Koreans.
