There was a modeller here in the UK who published a lot of designs back in the 1980's that used cardboard as the main building material.
It's okay providing you coat it well in resin, but you do have to be extremely thorough, because the slightest imperfection and water finds its way in and makes a soggy mush of your model.
These days I wouldn't bother, favour either a good marine grade ply or if you can afford a bit more weight, plastic or GRP.Comment

You need to mix the epoxy with 50% lacquer thinner for the first coat, then let it set up, before applying a second coat. It will then capillarate (sp) through all the fibres. It's pretty obvious too because the board changes color.Stop messing about - just get a Sub-driver!Comment

To see what can be done in cardboard do a search for Greenseaships' work over in the RC Groups Scale Boating & Electric Plane forums. He's built a number of liners & warships over the years as well as several outlandish, ie, HUGE electric warbirds in cardboard.

One of my club mates in Wagga is building a plug for the USS Lexington in 1/72.....slow progress he got side tracked with a 1/72 model of IJN Shinano....
Seen here on her maiden test run back in June escorted by Yamato and Takao....
2012 pic of the Lex plug behind Shinano....an Akagi hull has since joined the stack of projects too!
