Background of the Gambier Bay
The USS Gambier Bay was a Casablanca class escort carrier of the U.S. Navy. She took part in the Battle off Samar (centermost action of the Battle of Leyte Gulf) in the Philippines on October 25, 1944. This battle is famous for being one of the greatest military mismatches in naval history. The Gambier Bay sank after helping to inflict serious damage and turn back a much larger attacking Japanese surface force.
