Gas regulator for Torpedo Launchers

Can anyone tell me what this little thing drawn in the red circle in the picture is? Maybe Mr. Merriman can give a reasonable explanation. I'm guessing it's a pressure reducing valve, but I'd like to know exactly what the internal structure looks like. Thank you all for giving me answers!

Thank you very much sir, can I ask why is it necessary to filter the compressed gas? Is it the impurities in the gas? I have not seen such a filter in your current torpedo launcher.

In the early days -- when I was launching the weapons pneumatically through the use of tight tolerance selector and firing valves -- I was worried about slag, shards, and flux crystals, all a consequence of machining, soldering and other manufacturing processes, fouling the system.

However, once I matured the launcher to a strictly mechanical system the need for a filter disappeared.
