Something different.
Design started in 1959. Noisy, but ambitious goal. Reflected in trying to catch up and surpass the American new nuclear subs. It took about eight years to design and build usually a SSN SSGN. in the West. With Charlie this was rushed compressed to build a remarkable boat for the time in 3 years!
The propellor stages are offset by 30 degrees. Fortunately for the West these props &the plant nose were noise as very loud and distinctive for a even a sonar 101 trainee. A Charlie boat was easy to identify acoustically. The speed hoped (30 knots to intercept American Carrier task groups was a disappointing 24 Knots underwater.
The first Charlie one was even loaded (rented) by India fr 3 years. But it was still quite an achievement at the time as the Soviets were taking big risks in engineering as much as their space program was too at that time.
The sub was armed with 8 p-70 Ametist anti-ship missiles which used only rocket propulsion then and only had a range of 30 km using unreliable early satellite information or a Bear bomber.
Charlie 1 was the first submarine to launch a cruise missile underwater, and the first Soviet submarine with one nuclear plant and one propellor to transit the polar ice cap .
The top vertical rudder has a spoiler to compensate for the round bulged and hydrodynamic (lift) of the bulbus bow. Without this the Charlie wanted to pitch up at speed.
Charlie 1 submarine K-43 as Chakra (1988 - 1992) in the Indian Navy.
