    This image, marked with numbers, shows the number of external torpedo tubes, and the external torpedo tubes are shown with dashed lines.

    Shipyard records show that SS-168 Nautilus was overhauled (receied modernization) from July 30, 1941 to April 20, 1942.

    U.S. Navy Information (from navsource.org ) Original article:
    Nautilus (SS-168), is shown off Mare Island Navy Yard on 3 August 1943. She had already received external torpedo tubes during a Mare Island refit, July 1941-April
    1942. One of them, firing aft, is visible under her gun deck. Another pair was fitted under the gun deck firing forward.During the 1943 refit, they were relocated to
    positions nearer the bow, as shown here. Also visible is torpedo storage added under the gun deck.The weapons in deck tubes turned out to be vulnerable; during
    the Battle of Midway in June 1942, for instance, a Japanese depth charge started a torpedo in one tube. That was potentially extremely dangerous: the torpedo
    armed after making a fixed number of propeller revolutions, and the external tube was not accessible unless the submarine surfaced.

    Source from Wikipedia:
    Armament:
    6 × 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes (four forward, two aft; 24-26 internal torpedoes)[9]
    (four external tubes {two each bow and stern, four torpedoes} added 1941;
    provision for 8-12 additional torpedoes externally)[9] 2 × 6-inch (152 mm)/53 caliber Mark XII Mod. 2[9] wet type[9] deck guns[3]
