Well for a new Submariner on the block who is about to pick up a Gato kit I'm glad I saw this thread and did not take that beautiful color photo as gospel and paint the underside in a red oxide color. With a mainly armor building background using a red oxide primer is very common when doing German based Panzers and even incorporating into the planned camouflage. Still a great photo though.
