This was one of the S class boats built in Bridgeport CT. by Simon Lake's company(The Lake Torpedo Boat Co.)-it's the S-51 off Block Island and was subsequently lost in approximately the same area .

Interesting story, having spent many nights in low visibility ships I was always hyper cautious when other ships got anywhere near me. Better to be safe than dead!
