Scribing - tools and templates?

Folks I have an interesting forthcoming summertime (winter for you guys North) project which involves scribing details into a GRP hull devoid of nice details (hatches etc).

Questions - what scribing tools are best for the job?
Where to buy tools?
Is the best way to make templates to guide the scribe for hatches etc thin sheet brass?
What techniques are the most effective?

Best tool is a high-carbon steel. I take an old small rat-tailed file and grind it to a point. Various point angles and shapes for special jobs.

Always work to stay away from wood fiber and glass cloth. Scribe into a friendly substrate such as gel-coat, plastic, or two-part filler.

worth the price of admission - thanks David. Yep the hull I hope to be working on is Gelcoate. Did you make those templates?
