Your right Dave, It does look like a type 7 with those low mounted forward dive planes but the picture caption was Japanese sub but I think that they are wrong. Not sure about the tubes.

Gantu, you may be right. According to wikipedia the L2 class did have their torp tubes removed.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Type_L_submarine
