    Whats up with this?

Inquiring minds have a need to know! These two pictures show various Yankees hulls with a large gap in them. Are they cut and being floated together or apart? If they are being demolished then why is the cut so clean and why are they in the water?Click image for larger version

As per SALT agreement, both the US and Soviets maintain a limited number of SSBN's. To insure verification of 'deactivation' of those boats in excess of that number, the entire missile compartments were cut out.

What keeps these monsters on the surface is the watertight bulkheads in the after end of the Operations compartment and forward end of the Missile compartments.

Here's some pictures showing the American's version of this, also with some reactor sections cut out. The first one is one of my favorite all time sub pics, a good look at each submarine reveals something. A good example is the USS Barb shown here, very revealing indeed if you know what to look for!

The Barb (which is the second sub from the bottom of the photo), features the vertical fins on the horizontal stern planes as what would become standard equipment on the Sturgeon class. The Barb was the only sub outside of the Sturgeon class to have this feature. The fins contain PUFFS.
