What are these??

Check out these pictures of USS Sandlance at the time of her launch. Covering where the torpedo shutters should go are what looks like two giant cancerous growths! My best guess is that they are cofferdams for finishing whatever needs finishing inside there, but it could very well be something far more top secret. Any one here have the scuttlebut on these?

The yard where this boat was built atypically launches bow first. Those removable blisters are there to keep the sonar dome from digging into the mud. Diver's detach them before they tug the boat to the finishing pier.
