X Craft Chicken Legs design crosses the pond

I was really taken aback when I saw the detail in the SS X-1 in Groton today.

The aft dive planes and rudder design are almost identical to the design of the the British X craft.

I had to re-mold the shape of the Darnell model because he simply did not have the horizontal planes done correctly, so I am very familiar with the correct shape (which look like chicken legs) and especially grateful to Alan Poole who gave me his model of the X Craft.

This is really a superb subject to model. Large control surfaces aft of the prop, with a streamlined shape, and without the pointed bow and large flat deck area of the x-craft which tend to cause handling anomalies when driven hard. In short a fish underwater.

It's really like a small Holland class boat.

I produced a complete set of working drawings of the X-1 while I was a member of staff at the Submarine Force Library and Museum three decades ago.

This would be a nice kit, Mike. Hint, hint.

        David,

A small scale model would make an ideal mate for the little 1.5" Skipjack module you make.

The design lends itself well to being a dynamic diver, and the large control surfaces behind the prop indicate this boat should handle well in a very small puddle.
