SSN-671 Narwhal was one of a kind. She pioneered new technology(for the US) that was later used on the Ohio and Los Angelos. For one thing it had no gear reduction as it used direct drive. Also it had Natural circulation on the cooling of the reactor. It was the quietest US submarine until Ohio and later Seawolf. However, the reason for this post is that it was said to have had a "Turtleback" just forward of the tail to test out a new Sonar system, a towed array "TB-23 BQQ-5D sonar". I have not been able to find a picture of this modifacation..............................until now.

AH! Now thats what Im talking about. This picture is of Soviet origin, taken in a clandstine manner. I wonder if the US Navy knew that this picture existed in the Soviet archives?
