    Experiments, Theoretical and Unfinished Projects

Ok have decided to start a thread based on the above title. This thread is welcome for all to post to. Any country and any era welcome although my posts own will probably be mostly Russian as this is where my greatest interest lies. I am suggesting that discussions should be based on the title but also one offs, some of the Yankee class mods spring to mind, and basically anything different, HMS Trenchant's blue paint scheme being an example.

I will therefore start you off with this: Russian project 686.

Based on Project 705 Alfa. This was an idea to turn the Alfa type into an SSGN. it was however to be much larger than the standard Alfa. With 16 forward arranged missle tubes, similar to the Charlie class it carried the p-120 Malachite missile. Along with the planned increase in size came the inevitable decrease in speed, suggested speed was closer to 30 Knots. The main Reason for the cancellation appears to be in the actual design of the Alfa, the problems encountered in the design process of the Alfa resulting in its cancellation after only the preliminary design stage had been completed. Although based on the Alfa the drawing above has the stern arrangement more associated with the victor class.

Glad you like it David, I have been thinking about it for a couple of weeks. Mark finally made my mind up with his support. I am wondering if the hull size dictated the creepers going onboard of the planes, more efficient on a larger sub than the Alfas' outbpard position? Who knows.Yep good idea fictional subs aswell.........after all this one technically is! Peter.
