Type VII project Start - Questions

    G'day from Kiwiland,

Before I start a build thread on my Revell Type VII, I thought I would ask about a couple of points. Gotta wait "til he who shall not be named" has built me order anyhoo... :-)
Need to source some bits and pieces in preparation of a first Sub build by me. Have done as much reading as a kid does waiting for his present to arrive. God I love pictures... A thousand words and all that.

    So... Questions...
Battery - Is Lipo a good option for a sub? Dam things explode more often than I care to throw a model at and I have no experience with them other than flying small cheap choppers. only takes 30mins to charge em back up...

Battery Charger - If Lipo is good, what sort of charger should be obtained? Most of the stuff I source comes over the net and HobbyKing out of Hong Kong is a close source to us Natives of the South Pacific.

Deck Slots/Vents -Do you need to open them all up? (Pls no nasty bugger tell me "YES" when I dont need to) lol

    Thanks for looking

    Brett

Crikey did I post this in the wrong section??? 24 views no responses?
Am I being tested by the masters? I new it, its a conspiracy! :-)
Seriously Lipo scares me senseless, as does exploding subs from leaking lead Acid fumes.

At least some learned person could advise if all deck slots need opening, or which ones on a Type VII need nopening?
From the grainy pics of the PDF's I think I dont so, but hard to tell.
I am trying to read in the reports, if you can find em, but I now need new glasses (eye strain, crap I am getting old) lol

    Regards

      Yes, you're being tested.

      FAIL!

OK, now that that's over ...

... Don't sweat the Lithium-polymer batteries, they are not the little hand-grenades people and the press would have you believe. Use 'em, you will not be reduced to a pink mist precipitated by a horrible flash-of-white-light-and shrapnel

Open up the limber holes and flood-drain holes. Because I said so!

      Oh, yeah ... welcome aboard.

        Hahahaha ....^%&$

Cool, he said Flood and Drain holes... awesome, NO "deck" mentioned anywhere. Under the CT doesnt count as I know about them.
        On it it your worshipfulness...

**LIpo*** CIA and FBI have been about with the miss-information, eh?...a hah, Got you (wanders off to do some more in depth research on them, see how strong my Google-Foo is)

PS... I get the "white light and sharpnel" every time my Missus finds out I bought another "Toy"

        Thanks for the update, appreciated

          Hello Brett,

On the Type VIIC deck you will see some round circles which are about 3mm in diameter. These are mooring cleats in the lowered position. As per David's advice, drill these out for venting the deck and countersink the underside. Any opening smaller then this, surface tension will take over and trapped air can't escape. I learned the hard way by opening up some of the slots in the deck and air would only escape on the first dive. Once the deck was wet, trapped air couldn't escape. David also spplies vasaline around the holes to break the surface tension.

Now that my friend is worth a beer!
Thanks Myron, that info is gold.

I gather countersinking underneath just allows any bubbles to run a long / in / up so to speak?
vasaline under the deck at those locations - Aye Aye, Sir!

            Thanks

              Brett,

FYI Hanger One is a has a good supply of Lipo's in NZ. For various tools and supplies I used Acorn Models in Christchurch. I was working on my Gato when the Febuary Quake hit. It was like being Depth Charged 2 stories up! For knowledge you should spend the time going over all David's Cabal reports, not just the Type VII. Also the various builds that others have done. For me part of the fun in building the subs is looking through all the posts and seeing how various problems have been solved and the best way of doing things. I hate to admit it but it is usally David's way!

Thanks Vital, nice to here from another Kiwi, I am in Auckland, and have quite a range of Models, Mostly large Tanks. See my website you will see I am a model nutter... www.taskforcekiwi.co.nz
Acorn used to have a shop up here but they closed it. Have no fear, I know of Mr Merrimans Modus Opirandi.. Its all good from my point. I have been through as much as I can find, there is a wealth of good info about.

I hunted out all the reports I could find, (pdf's) and have been getting the Caswell Cabal reports since they started sending them out. I new one day I would place an order and build one. Which makes me very happy as I have them on my iPad and have been reading through them each night. When I am allowed to that is.

Ages, ago (3 yrs????) I also advised Mike Caswell that Paypal was the way to go as I wasnt comfortable doing a bank transfer, nor was he sending stuff to funny named countries like "New Zealand" hahahaha..... Now I see they have that feature!!! Back then it was barely .50c US to One Kiwi Dollar, glad I held off :-)

I specialise in 1/72nd scale for my Naval activities and have been sitting on these sub kits waiting for a suitable time to launch into building one. As is my way, I now have 3 x sub kits as I managed to pick up the Atlantic Type VII version for a $100 Kiwi (approx US $79.00) Just has a water damaged box. I was just hoping upon hope Mr Merriman and Mr Caswell were going to be around still with there neat products so I could get one, now at least 3 SD's. Ok enough from me, waiting for first order to leave the drydock Mr Caswell... eh by Air thanks, pls dont send via sea hahahahaha

                  Have a great day Lads

                        Thanks David,

Ok I will repost. Thanks Vital, I am from Auckland and used to use Acorn when they had a shop up here. Now I predominantly use Hobby King out of Hong Kong for my bits and pieces. Good pricing for us South Pacific moddlers. I have been suscribed to the cabal reports since they began and have them on my iPad for reading each night. Awesome they are. I also follow the builds and thats why I asked why I couldnt see some pics.

I have my own website with my models collection on it, with way more in storeage to build :-) I can retire and be ready to build as long as I can still see http://www.taskforcekiwi.co.nz
I like the 1/72nd scale for my Naval fleet, decent size, lots of bits available. I get a few bits and pieces from Allan Pew and Steve B of TF72 fame.
Picked up another sub kit for $100 Kiwi (approx $79.00 US) Just had a slight water Damage to the box. So Dave thats another 2 SD's now I will need to order, with fitting kits :-)

You dont know how long I have been waiting for Mike to introduce Paypal as an payment option. I was hoping upon hope you guys would still be around hehehe. Glad to see you both are

                        Thanks

                        Brett
