Australia has learned valuable lessons from its Collins class headaches

    Australia's woeful sub force problems

Green weed covering its black sides, rust streaks on its hatches and fittings, HMAS Collins is in from a rough winter ocean patrol at the Stirling naval base, near Perth.

      Thanks David.

Biggest problem we have in the RAN is manpower. We simply don't have a big enough sub force. Crew numbers are less than the boats we do have. We sold out and even send our women to war. If we don't have the crews now to keep a sub force of 6 boats either operational or in readiness - how the hell we can do it for 12 future boats is difficult to fathom!

But ... Moffitt said there were enough people. You mean the government lied to you?! Outrageous!

Any country that puts its females into harms way intentionally has taken one giant step backwards towards the Cave.

Well Moffit correctly pointed out our unique mission and our unique needs - that's all I'd take from it. The only way we'd have enough people given the present dire manning predicament, is to do it Soviet style - dumb arse conscripts. Its not for a want of trying. A qualified submariner able seaman can command pay and allowances on a par with a surface warfare officer (true). So we have tried bribery. The conditions are the biggest killer. A Collins has far less space per person on board cf say a US Nuke and her patrol times can be months longer than US boat. Often deployments have very little time between them. Our crews are exceptionally well trained, but are humans, and most are fatigued through lack of redundancy.

At least our Navy (save Moffit's comments on man power) is trying to be transparent - see this link http://www.navy.gov.au/Submarine_Sus...e_Coles_Review
and note the statement "Poor submarine availability caused by a crew shortfall, lack of spares and unreliable equipment"

Our Govt lies all the time - we have an unelected Commie in charge who formed a slime ball partnership with an extremist commie political party to become Prime Minister.
We even have the world's biggest Carbon tax -yes we tax the air you exhale (thanks to that partnership that no one voted for), and in fact the Prime Minister pre the last election said that such a tax would never ever be allowed under her Government!! Australia is already slipped deeply inside the cave. Oh and the chicks on board the Collins - I'd hate to be on the receiving end of weapon they launch. But agreed - I am deeply ashamed that my Govt sold out.
