I'll add, and I think I've mentioned this before, both the US and UK have pursued a strategy since the 1960's of reducing its manufacturing economy in favour of a 'service' based one e.g. a shift away from making stuff to banking and finance, or what I prefer to call smoke and mirrors. In the USA the industrial economy shrunk from around 25% to under 10%. Here in the UK the contraction was greater from 33% to around 8%. Disastrous for the UK in particular, as unlike the US we're a very small country with limited natural resources and we've seen the consequences with a stagnant economy and limited options for stimulus, as almost everything of value has been off shored or sold off.

With a reduction in industry, the education system pivots away from practical and technical skills, and within a couple of generations the knowledge is lost or greatly reduced, at least from that country.

Where's it gone to- initially Japan, South Korea, but once Nixon went and shook hands with Mau, China. Then there's enormous amounts of money being pumped into India, culturally significantly different from China but enormous human resources.

I'm 71, I prefer forums over social media. I avoid SM. You can go to the national archives or the junk yard (and their junkyard troll dogs too) proclaiming they are king of the dump. so what lol. You might find that one in a million Packard Cord junk automobile there, or you can go to the direct source and see everything - unblemished without bull ****.

An example - I recently located 12 new original documents on HMS Meteorite from the UK national archives. These are mostly on the Walter peroxide propulsion system, but there are also other invaluable exciting documents - HMS Meteorite's logbooks, and her 'Basin and sea trials on HMS Meteorite' 1948. All open public & de-classified.

On the internet (social media) I cannot accept the rehash distorted by self-appointed experts quoting wrong - the internet copied of a copy of a copy of a copy worthless and distorted,

The current RC Sub hobby has never had more choices to select building projects from. A perfect marriage of the old that works with the New that works. Proven watertight cylinder dive modules inside 3 d printed hulls one only dreamed about without a lot of molds and fiberglass pre planning and building.

Cost will always be a factor, submarines models projects are not your let's spontaneously build a rc off road vehicle today, with every part made for you.

I like the problem solving that comes from a new subject. The satisfaction that comes from it that your idea solved the problem well and tested by the sea (pond water) and you have a model still in the back of the car driving home.

'Old English prime minster- model submariners have never had it so good", at least when it comes to options for what they wish to build. So true.

Bear in mind that I'm talking in general terms, there will always be exceptions.

I too prefer forums to social media, however I've observed the utter death of the SC forum which has been in steady decline for years, yet their FB group has far more activity. That being said the posts I see there are aside from the odd exception a bit light on content, and I'm not sure membership of that page translates to new members for the organisation which may have consequences later on.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
