Movie, "Run silent, run deep"

I got the DVD of "Run silent, run deep" for Christmas and had a chance to watch it tonight. The boat looks like a Gato, but it has no forward anti-aircraft gun, or railing or even a water tight door to get to that deck like my model does. Was that a real sub in the movie and if it was, was that a late war mod they did to remove the gun? I'm building the Revell Gato and gave up on the little stantions. Too delicate for these old hands.

Typically the GATO/BALAO/TENCH boats stowed the stancions below decks (or in the superstructure) for 'rig for sea'. So leave 'em off. The boat in the movie was one of the above, pre fleet-snorkle/GUPPY conversion. Good flick.
