- Sad that the so-called journalist categorises an Ohio class as "an attack" boat.
- Sad given that our commie Govt - that came to office out of a post election deal, has just passed the world's biggest carbon tax, yet can't even contemplate a nuclear industry for Australia, which would have the spin off of a cheaper nuclear navy.
The reason why Collins cost so much are that we basically expect almost the same patrol times on station that you get as a given from nuclear boat. This is the reason why Collins is the largest Diesel in the world, that is until we procure even larger next generation conventional subs. Collins is the only "Blue water" conventional boat in operation and despite its advantages in the littoral environment - standard stations are blue waters.
We can't get enough crews as the conditions are horrendous. Half the environmental space of a US nuke, constant breakdowns as the boats are driven too their limits everywhere, and the near loss of boats on too many occasions. Whilst I hope it won't happen, I won't be at all surprised if we face a tragedy sooner or later. The press ****ping on about high costs is rich.
