U-boats surface at aeroplane swap meet.

I was at a local model aeroplane swap meet yesterday and was very surprised to find two U-boats lurking in the corner. Click image for larger version

They are both older models. Both are type IX's. One is 1/32 and the other is 1/48. I would think they are both built from scale shipyard hulls but can't be certain. The lay up seems rather thick compared to others I've seen. The seller says they where both built by his father who is now gone. He remembers them both working, but of course that was years ago. They are from the Vancouver B.C. area like our Flounder Bob so maybe he has seen these before?

Both are built the olde fashioned way, dry hull, with flat lexan lids and lots of nuts. I haven't looked over the big ones internals much yet but the smaller one has a very peculiar feature that I can't figure out. The ballast tank is divided into two halves that are nicely made of brass and fit along the sides of the hull inside the dry compartment leaving the centre wide open and this is presumably where the battery sits. There is a water pump that connects to just one of the tanks and a balance pipe connecting the two tanks together near the bottom. A vent line is connected to a tee and goes to each tank at its top and then through the lid and to a periscope. These means you need to surface to pump water out of course and you will get a spout of water from that scope when you fill the tank. What I don't understand is that the starboard side tank is considerably longer than the port side. Seems like it would list to starboard as the tanks filled. I don't see any reason for this, the port tank is not shortened to accommodate other equipment in the hull.

I don't have any experience with using two ballast tanks but from watching other people it seems like it's always troublesome. One tank always fills faster than the other and as the model tips toward the heavier tank it exasperates the problem. Any thoughts? Maybe in this case the model is heavy/stable enough and the tanks are close enough together it isn't a factor.

I was there as well. Never found out how much they sold for. When I left, they were still there. Not my cup of tea, so I didn't inquire about them. Schmitty, where do you live? I'm in Sammamish.

I'm pretty sure you guys have corresponded before. Also pretty sure those models are now in Schmitty's shop by the looks of it!

Yes, Indeed they are at my house. I couldn't leave them alone. I bought them pretty much first thing in the morning but left them on the sellers table for most of the day. I had a swap meet table at the show just a couple tables down from the U-boats. I arrived early Saturday morning (around 7am) and saw a guy unloading very large scale Messerschmitt 109 models from his car in the parking lot. I walked over and chatted with him outside and picked up a wing from one of the planes and underneath was a Dumas bluefish model. I said "oh, your Dad was into submarines?" and he said "Yes, there are two U-boat models I just brought inside on my table" I nearly fainted, Within minutes I had made a deal and bought two Messerschmitts, both U-boats and a Stuka (and he threw in the bluefish). Model submarines don't show up all that often so it is a rare occasion to see them at a swap meet.

DrScoles, we have chatted before through the subcommittee forum and I hope to meet you soon. Too bad we didn't connect at the model show. My local RC club has a great place to run subs in Monroe and hopefully we can meet up there this year. I live in Granite Falls, I am always up for meeting with fellow enthusiasts.

Substeve, You know I am sort of a swap meet Louie (that's a Sir Mix-A-Lot song). I enjoy buying, selling and trading with other modelers. I was really excited to see a couple cool old model U-boats show up this year. The model Expo was pretty busy and the swap meet was very active. I sold everything I brought to sell and bought some stuff I was really happy about. Speaking of trading etc... Did you buy the 1/32 British S-class from Bob? Hmmmmm...... Interested in any trades?

Ha! you are the early bird, great score!
Yes, I bought the S-Class from Bob and it's an incredible model, large, great presence, and beautifully built by Ken Griffin in Florida. No internal machinery yet but it will be a box system much like Ed Tordahl's system. I may move it up in the build list just to see it running on the surface. I would trade it for a nice home on a lake, need to see the home first...

Hmmmm.. home on a lake eah?.... I'll see what I can come up with. I got an e-mail from Bob and saw there was a British S-class and got over the top excited and then was completely deflated to see that it was already sold (within the first 12 hours) but I am glad to see that it was you (Steve) that bought it. I do actually have one in un-built form I got from Erich Von Kloss whom I recently sadly learned has passed away. I also have a O.T.W. W.T.C. (too many acronyms) I got from Dave Basden that he bought from a friend who bought storage lockers at auction and happened upon one with R.C. submarine stuff... what are the odds of that? anyway RULE BRITANNIA !!!
