Look at how high this thing sits out of the water.

Notice how the bow planes fold in , then are covered by doors that close behind them.

Just found some of the salvage operation details on raising the KURSK.
In these two drawings you can see how the cables were attached and where they were attached. They penetrated the outer hull and attached to the inner hull.
