    Romeo asw missile version

    Weve seen these pictures before of a Romeo with these bulbous bows. Surely they are not there just to be pretty. In 1973 they took Romeo S-49 and attached two 650 mm(25.5") torpedo tubes on top of the bow and farred it in with sheet metal. Those tubes were to test and then use SS-N-16 Veter Anti submarine homing missiles. They were also equipped with nuclear depth bomb capability. After sucessful trials they modified another one, S-11 in 1982. Obviously because they are external to the pressure hull they can not be maintained during the patrol and cannot be reloaded. Two older Whiskey boats were also modified. They also retained there 533mm(21") tubes.Click image for larger version

      Interesting adaptation. Seems like a much uglier version of what the British did with the T class (and others). Photos of modified subs like these are good for the forum and the hobby. Keep 'em coming.
