PROJECT 885 Yasen- Graney SEVERODVINSK CLASS

ID:	100721 This submarine is supposed to replace the Akula and the Oscar. So far they have only launched one and it is delayed due to technical difficulties. They are saying that it is the first Russian submarine to use a spherical sonar. Today I stumbled across a couple of good pictures, hence this thread. Are you ready? Are you sure? Ok here they are in the next post.

Could it be another titanium hull? The first picture looks like it.

Man these guys just could NOT settle on a few designs huh. Lets make one to shoot 40 missiles. Then lets make one to shoot 20, then lets make one shoot 6 but in shallow water, lol

Maybe they're doing them all half-a$$ed, so thats why they need so many types!

I read that they are having many difficulties with the design. I cant wait to see it in the water and see how she does. I did note that all the drawings show a propeller and not a shrouded empeller. In tests they have shown that a prop is definetly faster but not as quiet.

Spherical sonar allows better triangulation of the incoming sound waves, we've had them since the 60's, but we have moved on to bigger, better, mo' bad-a$$ stuff now

It's covered with hydrophones 360 degrees top to bottom. Gives Excellent coverage in all directions active or passive. Had them back in the 60's on US Boats and still use them today. Here is a link for the AN/BQQ-5

Yes, still do, but starting with SSN-782..no more spheres.....Bigger, better, mo' Bad-a$$.......can't say much more. Q-5 is old hat, not many of those around any more. Q-10 ARCI is the standard now
