Kursk hit by torpedo??!!

This picture reportedly shows a round puncture area that was made by a 21" torpedo. The picture is fuzzy and could have been doctored.

Modern torpedoes are designed to detonate via magnetic influence, they very rarely hit the hull. Besides, you have to realize that they cut the bow off of her to raise the aft portion, that may be a product of that effort. It has been pretty much proven that an internal explosive event sank her.

I have often read that a double hull submarine such as the Oscar would be highly resistant to a standard torpedo explosion. That is why I was told that the Navy was working on a MK 48 Adcap that would first penetrate the thinner outer hull and explode against the actual pressure hull or penetrate it as well as does a modern HEAT tank round such as is used by the M1 Abrahms.

Forget conspiracy theories there is enough evidence on hand to prove what the official finding was. The only torpedo involved was one in the torpedo room on board. This **** has been rehashed to death, no collision, no US SSN fired a fish, no friendly fire, just moronic outdated engineering using (HTP), a form of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide used as propellant for the torpedo. This leaked through rust on the fish casing (READ moronic maintenance) and generated a chemical explosion.

Not a mark anything torpedo. A homing torpedo would sense the magnetic field and would explode just as the field strength starts to decrease as it passes directly under the hull. Go to youtube and see what happens to a surface ship. The effect on a submarine would be greater due to the greater pressure of submergence.

Slats is right-on. Besides, if you knew how an Adcap worked for real, you would know that it does the job despite double hulls and other things along those lines. 2 Adcaps would sink a Nimitz class Carrier without a penetration hit.

Why would they lie about it? one type of screwup is just as bad as another really.

Twenty years ago the MK48 software was good enough to interpret the silhouette of a boat, and the weapon was likely to have been loaded with target type information enabling it to steer at the targets known Achilles heel. On most submarine targets, that would be the deck and torpedo loading hatches.

Nowadays sonar image resolution, processing speed, and enhanced weapon 'target characteristics files' (just made that up) assures that the MK48 not only hits the target, but punches it at its most vulnerable spot.
