Even with a relatively rich government (Russian oil and gas = free money for the government), Russia is taking its time with new sub construction. Looks like they'll rattle the saber some, especially when there's something going on domestically, but overall this doesn't seem to be very important to them. That said, taking their time has benefits--it's hard to think their subs will perform worse with more opportunities for R&D.
As to targeting US ships... is there something else the Russians could use to justify new subs? The Yasen video also had a battleship in the target taskforce, so the Russians are covering the bases.Comment
