    A note about numbers

Number on the sail and what to do with them. In the early to mid 70's SUBPAC boats out of Pearl had the numbers on the side of the sail . Most 637 class boats had the numbers above the sail planes but some boats had them below and astern of the sail planes (I distinctly remember USS Queenfish had them that way) The reason for the numbers on local ops was to reduce the number of unknown sub sightings that were a pia. When on patrol the numbers had to be removed. the problem was how do you keep the numbers visible till the diving point and then get rid of them. Our solution: White cardboard letters attached to the sail with double sticky tape. When we dived the numbers came off.
Now you guys have to decide when you run your boat how you will deal with the numbers. Are you on patrol or local ops?
