    2024 (1/96) Mid-Atlantic Fleet Run

Went with Merriman to the 2024 Mid-Atlantic Fleet Run this year which is STRICTLY 1/96 scale, although they will accept 1/100 scale. It's in Rocky Mount, N.C. I was there last year for a Black Friday fun-run and it was open to all scales. The water level was very low and on my first dive with the Nautilus it skewered the bottom but just below the surface. After blowing it came up...luckily. Dave was there the full 3 days and I only went for Friday this time around. The water level was nice and high, and you couldn't ask for more perfect weather the entire weekend. Such a contrast to two weeks before going to Cahutta. I took my 1/96 USS Shark out, and it ran perfect the whole time. We had a glitch at the beginning with the vent valve, but Dave made short work of it and it ran the entire day on...NIMH batteries to boot. Compared to tanks, subs don't draw very much juice. The Skipjack class is so fast and maneuverable that it got completely away from me four times. Two of them I thought it was gone. The last one I was driving it one way hit a glare and it wound up somehow on the other end of the lake. I was about to write it off. Dave told me at the beginning of the event...this time, that you absolutely couldn't go into the lake or the city would shut the event down. That ramped up the nerves of steel. Anyway, it was a very nice event and nice people. We were the only sub guys there though.
Dave got to run the Type XXI for the first time, and I was skeptical, but it ran very well. I gave Dave those photos and he's already posted the video. Somehow I got all the Type XXI video, but none of the Shark came out...next time. Click image for larger version
