I'm preparing built-up and kit versions of this SubDriver now so we'll be ready when the kits hit the street.

Will your fitting set include bow & stern planes look more like what is depicted on the actual subs, have bow planes that retract & include a working upper rudder? If you can get Nautilus to come out with a photoetch set, you'll have a homerun on your hands.

I'm on the look-out for authoritative documents regarding the look of these two boats. Can you help me out with URL's?

I had been looking at those 1/72th-scale kits also. Very interesting, with the kamakaze subs onboard.

          herrmill,
Are you saying there is something wrong with the design of the dive-planes in the kit or just that they would be difficult to convert to RC?

Based on previously released pre-production photos, there are major issues with accuracy if they have not been corrected recently with this latest delay in releasing the kit. As you can see from the following photos, the bow planes are not even close to what the original subs used & certainly aren't retractable, & I've not seen any upper rudder on either of the kits, only the guard. The colorized photos give you some idea of what the planes & rudder look like, but once you see scale drawings for the C type, you'll wonder what Lindberg's designer was smoking the day they approved the final tooling release.

We have a fairly informative thread over at SP dealing with the IJN subs that contain some very good drawings & photos if you want to detail this kit. I'm getting the I-53 to convert into an earlier B-type I-19 aircraft carrier & see a lot of work to bring this up to the standard we've come to expect from Revell.

I've been lobbying several aftermarket sources to develop photo etch & resin kits but so far not much luck due to the lack of available info on the subjects. Aside from the fitting kits being discussed, neither Nautilus nor IBS have plans at this time to develop anything. I hope that will change once the kits hit the market.

Mike, would you have any news to share? I've not been able to get much from Ernie Petit other than kits are currently in production & due to ship early June.

Was the upper rudder a modification used on later models?
It doesn't appear to be on I-52 & I-56, but is on I-171?
                Maybe that's why it's not on Linberg kits of I-20 & 53?

No, it was found on both B & C types which were a continuation of the KD6.

Here are several drawings of I-16, a C1 type, that clearly show the upper rudder.

Yea, convince Mr. Petit to ship those bloody kits faster than what's scheduled! I'm back home for a short visit in a few weeks & will miss delivery before I fly back. For what I'll pay in shipping, I could easily buy another or put down a healthy deposit for your new fitting package & SD.

Actual planes are behind the anchor well in photos but right at bow on the kit, very weird

                          Andy,

With your new reference books are photos of the C type boats different than what's shown on the drawings below?
