3.5" Skipjack SAS SD servo placement

    To All,

I am assembling the 3.5" SAS SD designed for the Moebius 1/72 Skipjack. I initially only mounted two mini servos (Caswell calls them standard servos) but now I realize that if I intend to actually put this SD into a 1/72 Skipjack I'll need three servos - one for rudder, one for rear dive planes and one for the sail dive planes. If that assumption is correct, that I'll need three servos, I'm having a devil of a time trying to fit them all with their control arms into the servo mounting foundations that come with the SAS SD. If, on the other hand, the assumption is wrong and that I only need two servos because the sail planes are ganged to the rear dive planes then I have no problem.

But let's assume that I need three servos. Here are some pictures of the setup...Click image for larger version

The problem is not the actual mounting of the servos - that's easy; the problem is how to mount the control horns/arms so that they don't foul one another. In all cases the push rods go towards the top or right in the pictures over the ESC.

So, has anyone built this Skipjack SD before and if so, would you please post some pictures on your method?

Assembling this SAS SD has been a real challenge for me as I'm just not used to cramming 5 pounds of you-know-what into a 2 pound bag.

    Dan,

You are correct that placement of the servos is easy. But back up one step and reconsider whether you really need operable sail planes. I found that I did not with my Permit, Alfa, and Victor. They all ran well without the sail and bow planes. Good luck.

      WR,

In answer to your question, I don't know, The Nameless One shows the sail planes being operable in his instructions for the 1/72 Skipjack. Do I, a mere mortal, question his wisdom in this matter? No, for I choose life.

BTW, thanks for your suggestions on the index tabs.

          Dear Nameless,

I believe I have cracked the code. After studying your pictures a lot, it would appear that you "cheated". What I see is that you mounted two of the servos as far outside on the servo foundation as possible and the third one in the middle thus completely disregarding the existing mounting holes in the servo foundation.

In other words,"You did what you had to do to make it fit and work."

          Am I correct?

It also looks like he used short or shortened servo arms.

As shall I. It's the only way to keep all the servo arms from fouling one another.

And, if you do purchase the Skipjack 3.5" SASSD, don't be misled by the servo mounting holes already in the servo foundations. Those were put there by You-Know-Who just to confuse the unwary.
