    Underhull "life"

Hi Vanguard: Your son is absolutely right. Most of the time we are timid or just simply donīt try to imitate the real thing.
To implement the technique correctly first remember these kind of growth does not appear everywhere and donīt have the same volume in all places.
They tend to appear sooner and more intensely in areas subjected to turbulence/ bow/ leading edge of rudders/hidroplanes/areas of the stern that "protude" from the basic shape.
The central/lower part of the hull is a lot darker and there the "life" take the form of dark algae (very dark green almost black).
The light colored (calcareous algae) appear where they get more light and the water is perhaps more oxigenated.
The basic technique is the same: You can "grow" the areas chosen for the treatment using the matte medium the right pigment (dark or very light) Remember to use the tip of a flat stiff brush using very little "mix" and going progresively towards the desired effect. The good thing is that while is still wet it can be washed with water. Also you can thin the mix with minute quantities of water to obtain the right consistency.
In the AFV modelling world another way of obtaining a rapid "grow" of volume is to apply directly the matte medium undiluted to the surface and throwing on top of it pinches of pigment....
Please donīt be timid when the time comes to paint these calcareous growth because over the withish overal tone appear flecks of beautiful hard to believe pink-purple-pale green.

Best regards and enjoy your modelling.

Aparemtly the underside of his boat was almost a Burnt umber in colour, but you're right about the leading edges, the lighter coloured areas are definatley in this area

        Marine gowth....

Hi Vanguard:Youīve got it; the bottom of the hull is "dark" and the areas which receive more light and faster moving water grow lighter coloured "colonies".:wink:
