Engel Patrick Henry question

Good pics on the Z cut. Ill be on the meeting if all goes as planned. One question is how do you bow the tabs when using the plastic sheet for that Gato? Do you heat it up and then wrap/mold it to the hull to get good shape? Subculture, yes hull formers will be required. I did have to add extra ribs/formers to a Moebius Skipjack upper hull due to warpage. Turned out well enough.

Do your home-work; learn about the various means of heat-forming thermoplastic type materials. It will serve you well

Tabs are produced by draping a heated piece of thermoplastic sheet -- typically .030"-.062" thick -- over a cylinder of slightly smaller diameter than the hull. You then cut that blank into discrete 'tabs'. An alternative is to jelly-roll a length of plastic sheet (its width equal to the desired length of the tabs) into ever tighter rolls till, when unwound, what is produced is a cylinder of slightly smaller diameter of the hull. Clip off the number of tabs required.

I believe that hull will be moulded in polyester resin, so you'd probably want to bond in a few formers if going for a split like that, otherwise it might spread.

No bayonet rings on the PH kit, they came much later although AFAIK they only were included on three later kits in the Engel range.

Often so much work trying to improve the scale fidelity of some of these older kits, it's easier to start over if that's a real concern. Perhaps just make a few alterations and simply enjoy the boat as a stand off scale item. Both the Patrick Henry and the Gato class were two early Engel kits imported into the UK in the early 1980's by SLEC, i remember the ads in Model Boats magazine and the price was absolutely eye watering to a schoolboy. Only ever saw one in operation many years ago but it ran very well on and underwater.

Suggesting a start over too separate of the Engels, maybe using parts like the bayonet rings etc.

I am sentimental too, but in modeling to higher fidelity in accuracy - is now the modern norm for various reasons (why they couldn't earlier - lack of internet - security etc)..

But today, would you buy a Aurora Seaview or a New more accurate Morbus Seaview? Obviously the later now.

Too bad the desire for accuracy in modeling subjects spilled over into a desire for accurate internet information on the net too.

A complete NEW 3d printed George Washington SSBN class would be a revelation. A modern do over of the Engels components with a new accurate hull. . There should be tons of research on these boats now. I was a kid and my incle once we drove by Mare Island NSY at night watching from across the river and saw Mare Islandin Vallejo all lit up ,all the building ways covered and busy working 3 shifts cranking out nuclear subs.

They were cranking out these boats at a wartime pace in the late 1950's early 60s with simultaneous hulls being built at Groton EB Virginia NPNSB, New Hampshire Portsmouth NSY California Mare Island NSY.

I have an old Engel Patrick Henry and it is not complete. It is missing the dive planes, rudders and fair water planes. The model does not have any scribe marks for the missile silos of other hull and tower features. Is there some drawings that are available that I can use to create templates for these things? Also, I don't cate for original design of the rudders and dive planes from what I see in pictures of the model. I believe that scaled up Skipjack units would be "more cool" but I am willing to listen to the voice or season or that of "he who shall not be named" ;)

That was an attempt to represent the first of the '41', the WASHINGTON class. And not even close to capturing the geometry of those boats.

Treat your hull as a blank slate. The class had unique control surfaces, horizontal stabilizers, and sail. Take it from there. Get some good drawings of the class and scratch-build those components.
