We welcome anyone with a passion for submarines and a desire to learn and share knowledge about this fascinating hobby. Use of these forums indicates your intention to abide by our code of conduct:

  • Capsizing Blueback

    So, I own two 1/96 Bluebacks. One is an original SWM and the other is the new one from Nautilus models. The second one is still under construction. With the SWM, I could not ever get the included WTC to work properly. So, I thought I could put in a new 2.5 cylinder I bought from Nautilus. I got everything hooked up and testing properly. I put in the bathtub for a trim test. It immediatley capsized to starboard. I am not using the WTC foundations. Soooooo, How can I fix it??????????? More weight in the bottom???????

    That's the idea! Ballast low, foam high. Static stability is a must, particularly in single-screw boats. Here is a brief blog that I did a while back that might help. Others might do it differently, but this process works for me: https://www.rc-submarine.com/single-...-Trimmed-Sub-1

      Well, duh! place weight in the bottom of the hull -- you can't do that if the SD is sitting on that real estate. You gotta provide an annular space between SD and hull by the use of the provided SD foundations/saddles! That gives you the space at the keel of the boat to place the fixed ballast weight.





      You want the center of gravity (center of mass in some learned circles) to sit low and at or near the center of the ballast tank. The low c.g. is achieved by putting at least one pound of fixed ballast weight (lead) as low in the hull as possible. And you fix the longitudinal c.g. by placing that fixed ballast way up forward (in the case of the BLUEBACK model).
