    Albacore

I see that there were many versions of the Albacore...QUESTIONS:
Did the Albacore at one time have a rudder on its sail?
Did the Albacore ever not have front horizontal plains?

    Thanks in advance,
    Kim

The bow planes were dropped during phase-2. The dorsal rudder was on during phase-1 (short cord) and from phase-3 on (longer cord).

Ok, one more silly question...what the hell is the orange oblong thing on the nose of this, and many other subs?
I can only guess that its some sort of escape mechanism.

At the bow and stern -- escape buoy's. Standard on all boats up to LA class -- either taken off or welded to deck for deployment. Something to give mommy and daddy the warm fuzzies as to the safety of their man-child (God help us, they now have female types aboard!) serving on an American boat. Good for only shallow water escapes -- once past the channel you're ass was in a sling.
