    Evening All

Just dropping in to say hi to you all,

50 year old ish Vet (12 years Army) from the U.K. living very close to the famous Wrexham.
Several subs under my belt and currently the longest OTW VIIC build in history, bought back in 2002 from Bob D
and still on going. Had a few issues at the start which took its toll but I’ll soon be back on the build.
I’ll probably be asking loads of questions to you all along the way so I’ll try and not be a pain, the quality of the builds I’ve seen here is simply amazing so I’ll be in good hands.

Close family member served 28 years in the Royal Navy on Subs so I have a bit of a connection :-)

    Cheers

    Dan

Yeah, this is a solid place to get real answers and a little encouragement when needed. Looking forward to seeing your built progress and questions.

      However... There be Dragons here!

Several subs under your belt. What does that mean? Details, man, details.

What practical r/c vehicle experience do you have to this point?

Are you mechanically inclined? Do you have a proper set of machine and hand tools? Do you have a well-appointed lit, and accessible workplace?

R/C model submarining is not an entry level activity -- you should engage in this activity with a solid background in the above.

If you don't have it already, get Bob's book. And join the Zoom meetings -- next one's tomorrow.

        Cheers Chaps for the welcome,

A few answers then, I’m a radio engineer by profession, ex Army radio operator 12 years, man and boy as they say here in Blighty.
I’m an accomplished scale modeller, done some commissions in the past and still very much active on that side, love painting and weathering.
played around with nearly all RC stuff in my past - Cars, Tanks, Aircraft and then scale gliders -up to and including 5m -(16 Ft wingspan stuff ).
I bought my first RC sub back in1988 from Mr Darnell himself- a Type7C which due to me joining the military didn’t get finished.
Next project was a Sheerline Ohio boat which was built fully and operational in 1995, really nice on the water and performed really well.
I sold the Darnell and Sheerline boats to fund the RC glider addiction at the time, I kinda regretted it since tbh.

Binned off RC flying in about 2002 as I had a tendency to cry when a 4 grand glider re kitted itself into fibreglass shards and bits of wood when things went wrong or someone shot me down. So enter Bob D of OTW - I bought the VIIC from Bob the back end of 2002 and I’ve been working on it since. Well I say since, it’s been a while since I did some work on the kit and it’s in storage with a mate for a while due to a house move.

I hit an issue with the build, the hull is slightly bent so the deck doesn’t fit on, that caused the build to grind to halt so I could try and figure it out. Plan is to do what Bob M did and section the boat forward and aft so I can get the hull straight and easier access for the OTW WTC to fit .
My best mate who kinda got me into the whole RC sub gig passed away suddenly last year and left me a Futaba F-14 twin stick set so that’s stirred my desire to get the boat finished.
I’ll be heading down south soon to pick up the hull and deck so work can commence once again on the build, Conning tower is 80% finished, deck guns are built and super detailed just awaiting paint.

And one other thing, I’m not Welsh, just a Cornishman who fell in love with a Welsh maiden :-) Living in Wales since 2005 so I’m almost a local.

        Regards

        Dan

Welcome Dan! I spent 14 months stationed on Diego Garcia (US Navy retired - 38.5 years) with the Brits - never drank so much gin in my life...! Cheers, Mike

We Brits do enjoy a tipple or two, reminds me of my day aboard HMS Turbulent, I was on leave from Germany when my uncle returned from the first artic patrol where two RN subs met up at the North Pole. lots of photos of Turbulent and one of the Swiftsure boats together on the geographical North Pole taken from a RAF Nimrod can be found online. I was invited to pop to Devonport to see the boat coming in, The RN set up a families day event for the afternoon so I jumped at the chance to get aboard.
After families day was finished I was invited to stay aboard as I was serving military, I had a more in-depth guided tour by my uncle meeting the crew and a few more places not shown during families day. Once finished it was to the mess for a little tipple or two, or three. The Beer Boson used a boat gaff to pull the biggest stash of Carlsburg CSB beer from the smallest locker in the mess located under our feet.
Things got quite hazy as you can imagine,
Fantastic day and one that will remain with me forever.
