I remember the news on the press in the 80': That happened when the sub tried to pass Gibraltar Strait, bounded to the Mediterranean, too close and under a soviet mechant vessel (named BRATSVO) to avoid sonar detection from the NATO. Seemed like they tried to perform one of those movies when US subs entered Tokio bay under a destroyer. They got really close and ... there's the result.
