Started the next side project, a Russian Shchuka (don't ask me how to pronounce it). Kit itself is Russian, too. Had it in the backlog for years and now it's time to put it together. The kit is, very, very good. Highly detailed a very good fit. First I drilled opened the liber holes, put in the anchor housing and some bulkheads, that help with the alignment of the hull halves. Then I glued the halves together, added bow and stern extension and filled the seam.

Dr.
here is a nice looking model that would be right up your alley. Love to see you do it.

Continued with the Shchuka. I added the deck...straightforward job, good fit, only minimal filling and sanding needed. Then it was time for the first PE addition. The middle part of the deck was replaced by a more accurate PE piece. Again pretty much straightforward: I filed the surface flat, then removed more material using a draw blade and glued the PE into place using slow curing superglue gel. And then I made a decision that will cause me a lot of headaches: I decided to drill out all the holes in the deck using 0,4 mm diameter drill bits. Already broke 2. Ordered another 10....

Finsihed the mind numbing task to drill open all the holes on the deck wth 0,4 mm bits. About 20 of those drill bits lost theitr life during the mission. But the result looks good....
Then I opened the deck in front of the middle platform and glued a nice PE grating over it. Same with the exhaust: I drilled out the styrene, covered it with a PE geating and the put a bent PE housing over it. The I put the control planes in place as well as the drive shafts and the rudder protectors.
Finally The middle platform got 10 support struts port and starboard.
All in all a highly very well fitting kit, only comparable to Japanes kits. Hard to believe it's Russian.

Progress on my 1/144 scale Shchuka class submarine. The conning tower had two gates, one on port and one on starboard, that could be lowered to form a platform for the rear gun. The gates are made of three highly detailed PE parts and look great. The mast got additional PE and the bridge, the forward gun platform, and the sides of the tower got hand rails. I replaced the masts for the antenna rigging with brass to make them stiffer.
