For those looking for a small boat.
The sail, screw and rear appendages are injection molded plastic while the hull is FRP.Make it simple, make strong, make it work! -
In addition there is are 1/144 kits of the USS Thresher and USS Permit (same kit, different decal sets) made by Modelsvit which was first released around 2016. From hull details and instructions it appears that Greg Sharpe's plan was used as reference.
The construction is similar to the MikroMir kit with a glass reinforced resin hull, which appears to have been constructed in upper and lower halves, then glued together along with injection moulded plastic parts. There is a plastic tail cone on the Modelsvit Thresher, whereas the Mikromir Stugeon has plastic nose cone.
Both kits look like they could converted to RC with a 50mm cylinder, either by splitting the hull axially along the upper lower hull join line or radially for a bayonet assembly. The rear stabiliser and planes are moulded as single piece in the Modelsvit kit, so these would need to be fabricated separately for a functional model. However it might be possible to adapt the existing rudders as these are separate pieces.
Also for a static model construction I recall seeing a third party resin 1/144 7 blade S5W propeller being available (I think on Shapeways) which appears to be more accurate than the one in the kit.
