Two long time sub commanders passed away today

John Schagane and Erich Kloss both passed away today. Long time sub guys. We're poorer today for their passing. Condolences to their friends and families.

I’m at a loss. Both were fine fellows, and proud I got to meet them.

Of the approximately 40,000 men who served on U-boats in WWII, it is estimated that around 28,000 to 30,000 lost their lives.

RIP. I was more familiar with Erich from the days of Sub Pirates and when I was a SC member, as he tended to be a fairly active poster. I don’t know the circumstances of his death, but it’s certainly no age to check out.

Rest in peace Erich and John, I knew them both. They were long time attendees at the Carmel regattas and will be greatly missed.

As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us, as We remember them.

I will miss Erich. He was always kind and helpful. John, I never met, but I know of him from SCR and postings. Another great loss to our hobby.
Here is Erich from this past Cohutta Subfest:

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

                  Casey,

I never knew either one of these gentlemen! Sounds like they were a big part of the sub community! May they rest in peace!

So bizarre... I was just emailing back and forth with Erich a day before he passed. He was planning on Carmel and we were talking about the Alfa 3D files he got from me. Shows just how fleeting life can be...

                    RIP, gentlemen. You'll be missed.

I first met Erich at Subfest like Tom. Was interesting to see him assembling the ‘test hull’ he was gluing together, see the pics that Tom posted. Then he thru it in the trash before he left since it was only a test hull. He was plenty interested telling me about 3D printing which was interesting to hear. Also saw him at the Shrewsbury PA YMCA event in February. Sad to hear of his passing. Life can be short, enjoy it as much as you can and take care of yourself. RIP submariners.
