Repair of old D&E 1:96 Skipjack

    All,

I've got an old (probably over 20 years old) D&E 1:96 Skipjack, and in the course of a move, it sustained some battle damage.

I needed some advice on what to use to put it back together. The tail section is slightly warped (out of round), as are both the top and bottom. The sub had broken free of it's mountings in its transport box, and unbeknownst to me, had rested there for several years. I've attempted to wrap it in a bunch of rubber bands around the tail section to pull it back into round, but no dice. I'm almost wondering if I need to rebuild the entire stern....

Any thoughts on how I can bend these things back into shape?

Also, I'm hunting for a brass prop for the sub, since you can see I've got an opposite turning 7 bladed screw on it now (It was all I had to keep it running at the time).

    Thanks very much-

Use a heat gun and heat up area that is twisted and twist it back into shape.

Gotcha. How about adhesive to re-connect the tail feathers? I am hesitating to use CA.

Wait for a bright, sunny, hot day. Remove the sail. Place the upper and lower hull halves on a table under the sun and take a nap. GRP has a bit of shape-memory. See if that pulls things back into round. Heat-gun is an option but fraught with risk!

CA the stern cone back in place but insure that the propeller shaft is in perfect alignment with the hulls longitudinal centerline before you commit. Or use a slow-set epoxy adhesive. In either case use temporary brass straps to hold the unit in place to the lower hull till the glue changes state.

            David,
Thanks alot. Right now temps are going to get pretty hot, so I'll leave it out for an hour or two to see if it'll relax back into shape.

I'll also follow your advice on the stern cone and use brass strips to ensure alignment.

If I wanted to put a (close to scale) brass prop onto this boat, does anyone know which of the Raboesch props would do the trick?

            Thanks all-

Sorry, I should have clarified, this is a 1:96 scale.

But, given that diameter for the 1:72 scale, a 1:96 scale prop should be between 40-42mm. Does my math check out?

Do you have any of those around?

Hmm.. I don't think so, but I can have Jason check. I'm out of the shop now until August.

Actually, better yet, if you could reach out him directly at jason@nautilusdrydocks.com, it will cut out the middle man!

Screw that! Send me your address and I'll blast the proper propeller your way -- it's white-metal... deal with it!
