Can anyone shed light on what this equipment is?

Looking to understand what the hump / raised deck and semi dome is on the Trafalgar class about halfway along the deck aft of the sail.

    Thanks

Hard to see with that resolution, but I believe your referring to the GNATS Sonar dome (General Noise and TonalS)

Here you can see it on the USS SHARK SSN-591, added during a mid to late '70's refit.

...so I added it to my 1:48 Scale USS SHARK SSN-591.

I'm no Sonarman, but I believe they were typical on US Fast Attacks in the 70's & 80's. The Boomer I served on didn't have it. Took me a while to figure out what it was myself lol.

Allies as we are borrow a lot from each other, so it seems possible. Again hard to see what you had. Could also be a WLR-9 Acoustic Intercept Dome. TORPEDO IN THE WATER!!!!!!

Here's another view - the deck is beefed up in a small hump surrounding that dome.

I still think it's an acoustic sonar dome. Having served, no hatch I've ever seen on a sub had a dome to mate with a DSRV, it would NOT swing fully open in the chamber. Plus I don't see any hatch seams, but I do see a hatch aft of it.. The taller one at the bow I'd bet dollars to donuts is similar to the US WLR-9 Acoustic Intercept.

The GNATS type dome I bet is aft, stbd at the waterline in the pic.

These boats have a towed array? Really not familiar with British Boats, much less a TRAFALGAR. Could it be a cover for a retrofitted towed array reel?

The pic Capt, Gaito shows with the DSRV is either an LA, SEAWOLF, or VIRGINIA by the looks of the Towed Array Housing. Hatches are FLAT.

I would pay money to see a video of how those bow planes transition from 'retracted' to 'deployed'! Something like ALBACORE phase-1 and 2 I betcha!

Hey David, here is a dry dock shot. I think the bow planes on these retract straight in.
