Boomers (to put bombs on target) MUST know where they are; and be able to, when needed, monitor just about the entire radio spectrum for position (satellite, LORAN, and DF fixes) and traffic concerning changes to patrol status, ball scores, and family-grams. That's a lot of optics and antennas to poke above the water. Never all at once, but specific masts raised when the need presents itself.

This picture saved my butt this week. I'm trying to finish a boat for SubFest and was struggling to get enough paint out of my detail airbrushes to cover adequately. After looking at this series I spied what appears to be a Paasche Model H in the hands of The Master, and handily covering fairly large areas with paint! Somewhere in my stash a Model H was hiding from 30 years ago. Long story short, I just finished the primer and the color coats will go on tomorrow with the details and weathering to follow.

Funny seeing the swimmer in whites! My whole time they were always in swim togs and their little cute booties with fins at the ready. Of course, by then they had quit doing the Pacific Gray paint job, too. All black topsides. I guess somewhere along the way they found it didn't make a difference and was less labor intensive to only use 1 color.

Yeah, we all had to be in whites (the grunt line handlers hid behind the sail) for this classic picture, taken from Ford Island -- many a boat had its portrait taken like this. We painted the boat in Guam just before the transit to Hawaii, where we staged out to the Canal ocean swap for our eventual stay at Submarine Base, New London as we got the boat ready for the EB yard period.

Safety-tracks. You done a harness with a trailing leash that shackles onto the safety-track. Keeps your ass strapped to the boat if you go over the side in heavy seas or stumble from a bad drunk the night before. Commie's use a pipe-sections safety-track(s) that sit proud of the deck. We use a T-section extrusion that sits flush or proud of the deck.
