Everyone in transit or getting ready to leave for Red Clay resorts. Stop. Below is a letter Bob just sent to those on his attendance list:
Due to the developing hurricane forecast to hit Florida and Georgia, and the subsequent extreme weather watch for Atlanta and north Georgia, I have made the difficult decision to cancel the SUBFEST event in the interest of safety and caution. I have been in touch with both the venue and event hotel, and reservations at the event hotel can be cancelled with no fees.

I'm actually currently in Arkansas with Logan and Gracie, halfway to SUBFEST, typing this message from a hotel room. Once I get back, get unloaded and have everything unraveled, I will begin work in determining if we can do a new date, perhaps in the spring, or if we will allocate the resources to SUBFEST 2025.

      Thank you for your understanding.

      Bob Martin
Disappointing as this matter is, I want to extend to Bob and his crew my appreciation for their work on past events and this year's SubFest event. Stand by for further information on this matter as Bob plows through the many tasks required to lessen the hurt this situation has caused those of us who planned, worked, scheduled, made reservations, and -- as I write this -- are on their way to the now cancelled event.

Hang in there, guys, what can be done, is being done by Bob and his crew to get things worked out.

      David

Hey, stuff happens. I’m sure everything will work out. Maybe we can get another date soon. Thanks to Bob and everyone that planned the event and hopefully it’ll work out another time.

Saluting Bob and the rest for a difficult gutsy and correct decision.

I second that, sir. And... now to pick up the pieces and make new plans.

Sure someone out there would say, it' a fierce storm, there's flooding - your running subs models anyway, aren't you?

Well, it doesn't quite work that way...lol

It looks like the storm will be out of Fort Oglethorpe by Friday afternoon, but the lingering floods will be around for days with 8 to 12 inches predicted. A lot of those back roads we travel on to go to the Regatta won’t be passable.

I think Bob made a good decision. Now the question is will it be moved to spring or a full year later? My hope is a spring run.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Talking with the resort, it is looking more and more that a re-schedule we like to call SUBFEST 2024 - Redux will be rescheduled for the first weekend of May, 2025. If things go well there, it is quite possible that we will look at keeping this time for all future events.
                        • No hurricanes
                        • Nice weather
                        • No other sub events to conflict with
                        • First spring runs for a lot of folk up north who are just coming out of hibernation
I'll have more in my newsletter coming out in a few days.

I think that is a good decision, as May always seems like a decent month for activities.

Before the hurricane, which was substantial got there, what screwed over the event was the weather front pushing through. It was moving West to East but then pretty much stalled out. and the rain/storm moved from South to North along the West to East front. I was 150 miles north of Cohutta (on Tuesday before the event) and the weather kept getting worse and flash flood warnings were coming more and more. I drove home on Thursday morning and started going north on I-81 and about 100 miles north it was blocked up, so I headed East on I-77. After I'd gone about 40 miles I was on the other side of the front and it was sunny and hadn't had jack for rain. I'm sure all this helped fill the cup before the hurricane even got there. My son got called out and had to drive down there to Florida to provide Medical assistance before the storm hit. Back in 2016, we had a tropical storm stop for 24 hours over the area. Merriman got flooded with 4' of water and my wife and I were sitting watching the rain in our sun-room...and we only live 5 miles apart.
On a brighter note, Dave and I went to the lake to test out the latest work on the Type IX. The morning couldn't have been more perfect. Sunny, and no breeze.
