I realize a bottom‑access design would mean flipping the sub upside down whenever you need to work on it, but is that really a significant drawback? Is that inconvenience alone enough to make the design impractical, or are there other reasons why this approach just isn’t typically used?

Hello!

This is my second Arkmodel Redshark RC submarine Kit conversion. I started it around 2017/2018, originally i retained most of the model as-sold, only changing the looks into a (to me) more attractive design, modifying the servo horns, engine mount and adding a piston balast tank etc. See pictures in the attachment, they wont show up in the post!



The boat was then ready, only missing painting it.

1,5 years later i figured the electronics, i.e. the corona receiver, were not working anymore for unknown reasons. After replacing it, i found there was still more to do on the boat and started all over again. The original upper deck got loose etc.
So i tried several new configurations to turn the boat into something more realistic, including conversion into an Akula-III after making a scale master model for the conning tower, a Charlie I, again with making molds for extra parts( sail, bow, sterncone). However i kept returning tp my original idea, a minimalistic model based on the original kit. I very much like the plane-like atrangement of the large forward bowplanes like on early british nukes.



I stepped over an envisioned Kriegsmarine Nuclear sub at Deviantart, somehow settled around the novel "Vaterland" of Robert Harris, a 1960's era "what-if Germany won WWII" fiction.




The boat was then modified to that image, using a black and grey paint scheme, russian-design emergency buoys, minimal deck detail and the "Puff" casings at the end of the stern planes i always found cool since watching Hunt for Red October with the flawed USS Dallas model. The stern was lengthened with a new cone, the planes were changed from all-flying to a convetional stabalizer-flap type except for the lower rudder.



Need to apply draft marks and flat clearcoat. The internals need a makeover,too. I figured my 14,4v twin battery caused the electronics failure.

This was a bit of fun playing with Google, eah didn't include the numerous misinterpretations that look like a drunk toddlers attempt to pain a rembrant - funny and frustrating stuff.

Anyone else tried using AI for projects? purpose and how did it go?

Google is okay for images, be patient and then be very clear what you ask for. Was thinking about painting my car wanted to se what it looks like in a little different color. the result was a literal paintin gof my car - doh! Copilot helped me a bit optimizing the jet drive i'm working my way thu now.

I have yet to see my first RC sub in the water other than this one , or i could say first funcitional - i;m not quite there yet. At events like Subfest are there any events /activities such as sub races? yeah sounds silly i'm building this for speed and agility with the thought or racing - not flat out but kind of like drone races thru 3d circuits, in our case it would just be underwater , kind of an obstacle course for time possible - hows that sound, anyone intterested?

Recently came across a discussion in another forum about a DIY ballast system using a small gear pump wired with a N.C. solenoid valve coupled to a floating piston ballast tank (syringe).
The valve prevents water from entering or leaving the tank when the pump is stopped. only when the pump is running whether fill or empty will the valve activate.


i consulted Google Gemini A.I. for info how to wire up solenoid with the pump.

Wiring a standard DC solenoid valve directly to a brushed Motor ESC is a clever way to control it, but it creates a specific technical problem.

When you turn off the solenoid valve to hold your depth, the magnetic field inside its coil instantly collapses. This sudden collapse generates a massive high-voltage spike (often over 100V to 200V) traveling backwards through your wires that can burn out the transistor, MOSFET, or relay channel controlling the valve. or
cause severe electromagnetic interference (EMI), causing your submarine's RC receiver or microcontroller to randomly glitch, reset, or lose signal mid-dive.

It suggested using a voltage spike protector like a flyback diode.

But as flyback diodes are strictly polarized. You cannot connect it across the solenoid terminals. When you hit reverse on your RC transmitter, the ESC will flip the voltage polarity. The diode will instantly become a direct short-circuit. This will likely burn out your esc or blow its internal overcurrent protection.

Since a regular diode won't work with a reversing ESC output, you have two options to safely suppress the high-voltage spikes:

Option A: Use a TVS Diode (Recommended)
Replace the standard 1N4007 diode with a Bi-directional TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) Diode rated for your voltage (e.g., a 1.5KE15CA or SA12CA for a 12V system).

• Why it works: Bi-directional TVS diodes are completely non-polarized. They block current in both directions up to their rated voltage limit (around 13–15V) and will safely absorb the high-voltage spike from the solenoid when it turns off, regardless of which way the ESC was driving it.

Option B: Use a RC Snubber Circuit
Wire a small resistor and ceramic capacitor in series, and place that combination across the solenoid terminals.

• The setup: A 10 to 47 Ω resistor (1/2 watt) connected in series with a 0.1 μF ceramic capacitor (rated for at least 50V).
• Why it works: Like the TVS diode, capacitors and resistors are non-polarized. The capacitor absorbs the high-frequency voltage spike, protecting the ESC's MOSFETs without creating a short circuit when the ESC reverses.

The AD2 is mounted to the aft equipment tray of my R&R WTC and lays alongside the ballast pump.

Upon powering up my WTC, the AD2 initially seems to function properly. The aft planes move smoothly to counter rise and fall of the back of the sub. The aft dive planes override feature works okay. Upon activating the ballast pump, the aft dive planes exhibit moderate jitters. Operating the twin brushless motors causes more pronounced dive plane jitters. I understand that this is normal for the AD2. It is said that the AD2 is sensitive to motor vibration.

The problem is that after running the brushless motors (sub is in the water), the aft dive planes override feature no longer works. Disconnecting the subs battery and re-connecting brings back the rear planes override, only to have it stop working again after I run the drive motors. Not good as I cannot program a working FAILSAFE command to cause the rear planes to rise in an emergency. Anyone with experience, hopefully a cure?

BTW, I’ll be at Subfest with this boat.
