I looked at the Mtroniks forum thread but seems hardly active, so forgive post here. My submarine repairs, after a sinking, now use two esc as above. The smaller one for pump and the larger one motor. The smaller one in the front of the cylinder has the positive lead disconnected to not use the BEC, the larger one does provide RC power. runs 10 NIMH.
I've seen similar problems before which were solved by the addition of an opto isolator, however having tried one on the pump channel it will not work, I am at a loss to understand why (i.e. no signal).
Can anyone suggest a remedy to either the problem as a whole or the non operating isolator. (Mtroniks).
Thanks.

2.4 GHz Antenna Routing

I have been on this forum for awhile, learning as much as I can, but this is my first post. I am in the process of putting together a Victoria class...

I have been on this forum for awhile, learning as much as I can, but this is my first post. I am in the process of putting together a Victoria class submarine 3D printed from the files Bob sells on the website. I have purchased the 70mm R&R WTC, and had Bob install a forward servo.

My question relates to receiver placement and routing of the 2.4 GHz antenna coax. I have an FrSky X18, and a TD R10 receiver. I purchased the 2.4 GHz antenna extension kit from Bob as well. The receiver will only fit in the battery compartment. However, this raises the question of where to route the antenna. If I have it penetrate the forward endcap, then it is easy to route, but causes issues with disassembly of the WTC for post mission and maintenance since the core of the cylinder is attached to the aft endcap. Routing the antenna through the center tube to the aft endcap, I would imagine will cause issues in that it is parallel and in close proximity with the power and servo wires (unless the shielding does a better job than I am expecting). I have seen low frequency radio antennas routed on the outside of the ballast tank, by notching the ballast tank bulkheads, but those antennas were smaller in diameter. Also, not sure if the antenna extension is long enough to reach the aft endcap, forward again sufficiently to reach the top of the sail hidden as a mast or periscope.

I apologize if I have missed posts related to this specific question. I would appreciate any insight.

Thank you.

Quote from Macgyver "Hell Week" episode.

This popped into my mind after coming across a post on an FB RC sub group.

The builder has essentially given up, saying it a "disappointment" and "discouraging" because vendors don't stock "oblong shafts" to match his 3D print.

a perfect example of a "CAD-induced" crisis. He designed a hole (or used a file) that assumes a specific, non-standard geometry, and now he's treating a simple mechanical interface like it's a proprietary aerospace component.

This is pretty much a DIY hobby, if the part doesn't exist, you make the part—or better yet, you don't design a hole that requires a unicorn to fill it.

He did the 90% that requires high-tech hardware and software, then got "stupefied" by the 10% that requires a hammer and a file.

As a Canadian, there is a special place in my heart for the Victoria/Upholder class submarine so I decided to purchase the STL files package from Nautilus Drydocks. I expected there would be some kind of README file with more information included in the download, but it’s just STL files. This is both my first submarine and my first 3D printing project so I’m a bit at a loss about what to do next.

I have a number of questions I hope someone here can answer:

How do I know what size of shaft I should order for the rudder/dive plane linkages? Is there a good way to measure the holes in the model? (The software I’ve got is making it hard to measure directly across the hole, as opposed to diagonally to some point deeper inside.)

I’d like to include some bushings to make the linkages friction-free. Do I need to edit the STL file to add the appropriate sized holder for my particular bushings?

The product page recommends the 70mm WTC, but should I order it with the two extra servos for the forward dive planes? I really only need one servo since I won’t be implementing any kind of retraction mechanism.

If I did order the WTC with the two extra servos, would they be in the forward compartment or in the back with the other electronics?

Following my visit to the Technik Museum in Sinsheim last month, where the Type 206 U-17 is on display...

Following my visit to the Technik Museum in Sinsheim last month, where the Type 206 U-17 is on display (https://forum.rc-sub.com/forum/photo...any#post193798) I had the opportunity to go the museum's other site at Speyer a few days ago, below are a few photos of the submarine's on display.

The Type 205 submarine U-9 has been on display here since the mid 1990's. In the late 1950's West Germany was authorised to build small submarines (initially under 350 tonnes) primarily to support NATO defence of the Baltic sea. The first class to be built was the Type 201 which incorporated non magnetic steel to reduce the risk from magnetic mines, followed shortly afterwards by a lengthened version with an improved sail arrangement. However, the non magnetic steel selected proved problematic as was subsequently found to prone to corrosion and fine cracks limiting the operational life of the Type 201 and 205 submarines built with it. As a result the first batch of Type 205's had a short operational life as training submarines, while the first two Type 201's (U-1 and U-2) were essentially scrapped and rebuilt as Type 205's. A second batch of four Type 205's were built U9 - U12 test alternative non magnetic steels, as well as other improvements which were primarily used as test and trials boats. The later Type 206 enter service in the early 1970's and was based on the Type 205 design with several improvements including the final selection of non magnetic steel. Also the export Type 207 (Kobben class) were based on the 205 design.

U-9 is an example of the second batch (known as the Type 205 mod) of Type 205's incorporating an alternative steel type. It has the original Type 205/201 rudder arrangement with twin rudders outboard of the propeller which unfortunately, this gave the submarine a very large turning radius. To improve the turn radius the final Type 205's (U-11 and U-12) had a different arrangement with the rudder behind the propeller and arrangement which was adopted in the Type 206.

As expected the internal arrangement of U-9 is similar to that of U-17, although as it is slightly shorter the control room is somewhat smaller and more cramped.

Also on display in one of the main halls are WWII German Biber, Seehund and Marder midget submarines.

Both museum sites are well worth a visit, with broad range of aircraft, cars, motorcycles boats, spaceflight articles, trains and other items on display.
