The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) was initiated in the 2020s to replace the Victoria class submarines. In 2023, the Royal Canadian Navy listed 15 requirements on which the contenders would be evaluated. In 2024, a formal request for information was launched.

Canada approached the following manufacturers which offered the following submarines:
Hanwha Ocean, Jang Yeongsil-class submarine (the KSS-III - Batch II)
MHI, Taigei-class submarine
Naval Group, Orka-class submarine
Navantia, S-80 Plus-class submarine
Saab Kockums, C71 Expeditionary-class submarine (a variant of A26 Blekinge)
TKMS, Type 212CD submarine

Canada short-listed the Type 212CD and the Jang Yeongsil in August 2025.

Since then, Germany and South Korea started to implement an industrial, technical and capabilities competition to earn the contract.

The Drakens had only one shaft with a larger 5-bladed VARIABLE PITCH propeller for improved underwater performance and reduced noise. The propellor was effective but the large diameter of the blades was exposed when operating on the surface. An early unique engineering answer to propellor cavitation noise.
